Mantova’s cultural park
Upon examining historical maps (Raineri, Giuseppe, Pianta della regia città di Mantova, 1831), we have realised that the area had a distinct identity characterised by green spaces, primarily dedicated to agriculture, with cultural assets interspersed among them. To recapture this lost memory and revive the area’s image, we propose the creation of interconnected green parks that link all the cultural buildings. This initiative aims to establish a cohesive and sustainable environment that celebrates the region’s heritage and promotes community engagement.
Drawing inspiration from the city’s future plans, particularly the Mantova Hub project, it becomes evident that this area has the potential to be transformed into a sprawling cultural park. This envisioned park would seamlessly blend nature with the city's urban fabric. By leveraging the existing green belt that encompasses the city and extends across the lake, it would be possible to integrate this specific area with other significant cultural assets such as Palazzo Te and the Palazzo Ducale district. The aim is to create a harmonious connection between these cultural landmarks, allowing nature and cultural heritage to coexist and flourish together.
The proposal aims to create a network that connects all the cultural spaces in the area through an open cultural park. This network would consist of a cohesive green system, incorporating existing roads as well as new pedestrian and cycling paths. The goal is to facilitate two main flows of people: one coming from the city and another from the lake waterfront. By utilizing the central position of the convent, it can serve as a central node, distributing visitors to the other buildings.
The Mantova hub project, which focuses on reusing abandoned buildings and transforming them into cultural and educational spaces, holds great potential for the area which aligns well with the literature festival and its objectives. Integrating the Mantova hub project with the open cultural park network can bring several advantages to the area.  Incorporating these new public spaces into the festival’s promotion adds a fresh and exciting element to the event. It expands the range of venues available for the festival’s activities, enabling organizers to host a broader variety of literary events, workshops, seminars, and exhibitions. This, in turn, enriches the festival experience for attendees and creates a dynamic and vibrant atmosphere.
